Megan Rim

Megan Rim (She/Her) is a PhD candidate in American Culture with a focus on Digital Studies at the University of Michigan. Her research interests broadly look at race and digital technology with specific attention to social movements, surveillance, infrastructures, and algorithmic bias. Her theoretical and methodological frameworks engage with critical race studies, Black feminist thought, disability studies, science and technology studies, and critical data studies. Her current dissertation project examines how the development and deployment of facial recognition technologies reinvigorate and expand racist systems, infrastructures, and logics looking at sites from Detroit’s Project Green Light to augmented reality facial filters on the TikTok app.

She is part of the UM Digital Studies Institute Certificate program and a Graduate Research Fellow of UM’s Center for Ethics, Society, and Computing.
